After each link is soldered closed, it is elongated into an oval by stretching (from the inside) with a pair of round-nose pliers.
Note the discoloration of the metal. This is cuprous oxide, the result of heating sterling (which typically contains 7.5% Cu) in air. The effect is limited to the surface; the oxide is easily removed in a mild acid bath.
