The end loops of the bowtie are now parallel. A second mandrel, 3.5 mm in diameter, is passed through the parallel loops.
In the picture, look for the vertical, pink, #4 knitting needle; that's the 3.5 mm mandrel. Note that the mandrels are held perpendicular to one another.
